Navaratri: The 9 Divine Nights

"Nava-ratri" literally means "nine nights." This festival is observed twice a year, once in the beginning of summer and again at the onset of winter.

What's the Significance of Navratri?
During Navaratri, we invoke the energy aspect of God in the form of the universal mother, commonly referred to as "Durga," which literally means the remover of miseries of life. She is also referred to as "Devi" (goddess) or "Shakti" (energy or power). It is this energy, which helps God to proceed with the work of creation, preservation and destruction. In other words, you can say that God is motionless, absolutely changeless, and the Divine Mother Durga, does everything. Truly speaking, our worship of Shakti re-confirms the scientific theory that energy is imperishable. It cannot be created or destroyed. It is always there.

Why Worship the Mother Goddess?
We think this energy is only a form of the Divine Mother, who is the mother of all, and all of us are her children. "Why mother; why not father?", you may ask. Let me just say that we believe that God's glory, his cosmic energy, his greatness and supremacy can best be depicted as the motherhood aspect of God. Just as a child finds all these qualities in his or her mother, similarly, all of us look upon God as mother. In fact, Hinduism is the only religion in the world, which gives so much importance to the mother aspect of God because we believe that mother is the creative aspect of the absolute.

Why Twice a Year?
Every year the beginning of summer and the beginning of winter are two very important junctures of climatic change and solar influence. These two junctions have been chosen as the sacred opportunities for the worship of the divine power because:
(1) We believe that it is the divine power that provides energy for the earth to move around the sun, causing the changes in the outer nature and that this divine power must be thanked for maintaining the correct balance of the universe.

(2) Due to the changes in the nature, the bodies and minds of people undergo a considerable change, and hence, we worship the divine power to bestow upon all of us enough potent powers to maintain our physical and mental balance.

Why Nine Nights & Days?
Navaratri is divided into sets of three days to adore different aspects of the supreme goddess. On the first three days, the Mother is invoked as powerful force called Durga in order to destroy all our impurities, vices and defects. The next three days, the Mother is adored as a giver of spiritual wealth, Lakshmi, who is considered to have the power of bestowing on her devotees the inexhaustible wealth. The final set of three days is spent in worshipping the mother as the goddess of wisdom, Saraswati. In order have all-round success in life, we need the blessings of all three aspects of the divine mother; hence, the worship for nine nights.

Kirtan in Albany, NY

Anyone else want to have a kirtan in Albany? I was involved in a weekly kirtan in Woodstock but I moved up here to Albany last summer and haven't found anything. I did find a great yoga class and could probably find a space where we could chant at the place that I go to class. Just looking to see if there is any other interest! Namaste.

What is Dattatreya Jayanti?

Today is Dattatreya Jayanti. So who is Dattatreya and what does this Dattatreya Jayanti mean to all who

worship him?

Dattatreya Jayanti is celebrated on the full moon day of the Margaseersha (Margashirsha) month. On that

day, the feast of Dattatreya is celebrated by his worshippers.

Dattatreya is the combined avatar of Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu. There is a very interesting story behind

the birth of Dattatreya.

Many centuries ago, there lived a rishi (sage) called Atri. His wife Anasuya was very devoted and a

pativrata. Narada used to talk a lot about Anasuya and her devotion to her Atri. That made Saraswati,

Lakhsmi and Parvati jealous of Anasuya. They decided to really test the strength of Anasuya's fidelity

to her husband Atri. So they requested their husbands Brahma, Vishnu and Maheswara (Siva) to test

Anasuya.

So Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva (Shankar) disguised themselves as sages and go to pativrat Anasuya's house

when her husband Atri was not at home. Anasuya welcomed the trinity and requests them to stay for lunch.

Brahma, Visnu and Shiva agree to that but they put one condition. They ask Anasuya to serve them naked.

Anasuya is shocked but cannot refuse the sages. But at the same time she is a devoted wife and hence

cannot stand naked before three strange men even though the three are sages.

Finally Anasuya hit upon a solution. With the power of her sincerity and devotion she turned the trinity

into three babies. She then removed her clothes and served the three babies their food. She treated the

babies as if they were her own.

Anasuya's husband Atri returns and immediately recognizes the babies for who they are. Anasuya tells her

huband about the sages. Atri explains to his wife who the three actually were. Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva

reappear in their own forms and bless the devoted couple. They leave back to the heavens but they also

leave a part of themselves in the form of a baby. This baby is named Dattatreya and thus Dattatreya is

born.

Dattatreya remained the son of Anasuya and Atri. He grew up to be a sage and a celibate. He remained

digambara (naked) throughout his life.

Dattatreya Mantra:

OM namo bhagavate dattaatreyaaya, smaraNa-maatra-samtushhTaaya

Translation:

Om salutations unto Lord Dattatreya who is appeased by devotion and remembrance

studying music in india

Any recommendations on where I might be able to study classical music as a beginner? Also interested in Kirtan? I am well schooled in Western/European Music and have chanted for a few years in the yoga community.

Cantor interested in purchasing a harmonium

Hello. I am a new member. I am a Cantor at a Reform synagogue in the northwest Chicago suburbs. I'm thinking of purchasing a harmonium for healing services as well as yoga classes that we do at my synagogue. I don't want to get anything too pricey and wonder what you all might recommend for someone who is going to teach herself how to play! There is someone on e-bay selling a harmonium that was donated to a thrift shop but the keys need to be repaired and some of the knobs are sticking. Do any of you know of places that repair harmonium in the Chicago area? There is also someone on e-bay selling something that might be a vintage harmonium or dulcinum, but they are not sure! I have no idea what I should be looking for...I just love the sound of the harmonium...

ideas of where to chant in india mid october?

Greetings lovely beings,

I am going to India for the first time this fall in October with Sylvia Brallier and a small group of folks interested in a sacred pilgrimage to the holy land of Rishikesh and surrounding areas. Plan on staying for a while for some sojourning. Anyone know where I want to go to be closer to Neem Karoli Baba , Hanuman, or anyone else connected to kirtan I should know about? Buying a Harmonium

Hey does anyone have any advice or recommended links on buying a harmonium? I don't have tons of money to get one of the nicer ones, but even the cheap onces have differences I don't understand, reeds and stops and whatnot. Does it make any difference for a starter?

More about Amma’s Farmer Relief Project:

Due to economic pressures leading to irresolvable debt associated with continually failing crops, many farmers have been committing suicide by drinking the very pesticides that no longer work on their crops. Especially in South India, where the growing rise of climate changes and other factors, crop failure has become more and more common causing suicide to spread like an epidemic amongst the suffering farmers. For example, in 2006 in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra alone, there were 1,044 reported suicides – one every eight hours.

In the spring of this year, after discussions on the issue with Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, Amma found herself pledging 43 million dollars to address this problem. She admitted later the large dollar amount she had pledged surprised her, but in the moment she had felt drawn to offering at least that much to help the situation. As part of the pledge, Amma offered that the MA Math would launch a massive project to provide aid and hope for the future for these struggling farmers.

“The problem cannot be solved through economic packages alone,” Amma told the Maharashtra CM. “What is needed is social and spiritual interventions so that the farmers realize that suicide is not the way out. In fact, it only further aggravates the problem for the families.” Feeling immense compassion for their suffering due to their unfortunate circumstances, Amma felt counseling and education could really help them get through to the other side.

On September 27 2007, the Ashram inaugurated two programs responding to this dire situation: Vidyamritam and Amrita SREE. These projects focus aid on the places with higher farmer suicide rates – Maharastra, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. These two initial relief projects are aimed at lessening the financial strain placed upon such agricultural families.

Vidyamritam - Educational Scholarships

Through Vidyamritam, the Ashram is providing full scholarships for free education to 100,000 children (ages 10 to 15) of farmers living below the poverty line. Many of the beneficiaries are in fact children who have lost one or both parents to suicide. The children receive a monthly stipend until they finish their education, subject to their performance in their studies.

Since the announcement of the project, thousands of applications have been received and they continue to pour in daily. Because of the huge response, the number of beneficiaries continues to grow.

As an extension to this project, the MA Math is conducting awareness programs to inculcate life skills for personality development. A newsletter containing articles, stories and discussion forums to further facilitate the intellectual and mental growth is also being received by all the children. Furthermore, special advanced-education camps and symposiums on environmental preservation are being conducted.

Amrita SREE (Self-Reliance Education & Employment)

Through Amrita SREE, the Ashram is providing free vocational training to 5,000 different groups of women from impoverished agricultural families. Though many of these women have now incurred their husband’s debt due to suicide, the MA Math has been supporting them in building their own businesses through vocational training in various fields, including tailoring, making snacks for small scale industries, electrical repair, and making paper products. After completion of their training, the women are given the necessary start-up capital to begin small, home based businesses.

( Lalitha Sahasranamam )

In this materialistic world, with an intention to create a mind devoted to mankind, sincere love, unity and by thus to God and avoid hatred and animosity towards our enemies, chanting of Sree Lalitha Sahasra Namam, a Sanskrit namavali from the ancient Brahmanda Purana, forms an integral part.

It is natural that, we mankind has to face many obstacles and set backs in our life. However, it is our will to conquer them makes us successful in our endeavors. We should have the Belief, Confidence and Determination to try for this. Some cases these qualities are in-born. But for many these are developed. A useful and beneficial method to develop this is by seeking solace in God by chanting prayers knowing their meanings. It will give the most advantageous benefits if one chants keerthans and namavalis with their meanings in mind. He/She will be able to express more and get closer to God.

May I with the blessings of Goddess Sree Lalithambika (otherwise called as Durga ma, Kali ma, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Bhagavathi, etc, etc) list some of the benefits of regular chanting of Sree Lalitha Sahasranamavali.

This is the most favored form of prayer to Goddess Lalithambika and it is also very secret and powerful than any other forms of Tantra or Mantra.
Regular chanting of Sree Lalitha Sahasranama is as beneficial as visiting religious places, taking bath in a holy river, offering food, offering materials. It is an indirect blessing to those who cannot do these kind of offerings to God.
Regular chanting of Sree Lalitha Sahasranama will ward off the evil from uncompleted pooja vidhis or rituals etc. It will also form a way of penance.
Regular chanting of Sree Lalitha Sahasranama will ward off premature death, will provide a long and contended healthy life. Fever can be cured by religiously chanting Sree Lalitha Sahasranamam by touching on a persons forehead. The number of times you chant the more benefit you are likely to get. The vibhuti used for Sree Lalitha Sahasranama archana can be applied then on the forehead, which will give much relief to fever and headache.
It is said that if one chants religiously Sree Lalitha Sahasra Namam keeping a glass of water (or in a vessel) in front and then pours it over the head, all sorts of troubles related to once planetary positions and from evil spirits will be warded off.
It is said that if a person chants Sree Lalitha Sahasranama keeping in mind a picture of Sree Lalitha Devi situated in the divine ocean which contains `Amrut' , he will be cured from any kind of disease related to poison.
It is said that if a person consumes ghee, which is kept while chanting Sree Lalitha Sahasra namam, he will be cured of impotency and will have children.
Regular chanting of Sree Lalitha Sahasra namam will ward off any kind of evil deeds or rituals (black magic) aimed at the person who chants the namam. The power derived from the chanting supersedes all other forms of prayers and the person will no more require to consult astrologers or any sorts of occultists. He will have tremendous self confidence in himself.
Through the regular chanting of Sree Lalitha Sahasra namam, the atmosphere will be purified. Each nerve in our body will be invigorated and subtle energies will be awakened in the person.
Sree Lalitha Devi will protect a person who regularly chants Sree Lalitha Sahasra namam from accidents and from the attacks of enemy and will make him victorious in all his good deeds.
Regular chanting of Sree Lalitha Sahasra namam will make a person blessed with word power, fame, good will etc. Particular importance should be given to chant Sree Lalitha Sahasra namam on Friday's which is very auspicious for the blessing of Devi.
Sree Lalitha Sahasra namam is the form of prayer that any one and every one can chant at any time and every time. It does not matter if one could not complete it. Because each of the namam in itself is powerful and will provide all sorts of benefits. It depends on what you wish and how you go about it.
It is said that chanting the name of Lord Siva once is as good as chanting the name of Mahavishnu a thousand times. And chanting the name of Devi once is as good as chanting the name of Siva, a thousand times. And of which Sree Lalitha Sahasra namam is the most important one to Sree Lalitha Devi herself.
It is very beneficial if all members of the family unite and chants Sree Lalitha Sahasra namam once in a day in the evening or whenever time permits. A family that prays together stays together. It will bring about unity, peacefulness, clear mind to perform and by thus prosperity.
In homes where Sree Lalitha Sahasra namam is chanted regularly there will never be any shortage of the basic necessities of life. This is the reason why the ancient Gurus would instruct their desciples to chant Sree Lalitha Sahasra namam even after initiating them into the mantras of other deities such as Lord Krishna, Lord Rama and other Gods and Goddesses.
It is also to be noted that by religiously chanting Sree Lalitha Sahasra namavali, we are seeking the blessings of Sree Lalithambika, who is also called Kalima, Durga ma, Devi, Parasakthi, Bhagavathi etc, who in turns is the universal mother. And how can a mother ignore her children when they are in distress or duress or troubles of any sorts? So keep utmost faith in her and start chanting.
Each one of the namam by itself is a powerful weapon for many sorts of day-to-day problems. The importance and benefits and related stories of each one of them will be listed successively in our page as per the wish of Sree Lalithambika.
Lalitha Sahasranamam can be chanted in many different ways. In Stotram form, all 1,000 namams are separated into stotrams of a few namams each and recited in this way. In mantra form, each namam is said individually, preceded by "Aum" and followed by "Namah". When chanted in mantra form, the endings of each namam are generally changed to "e" or "yai". Mantra form is commonly used to recite Lalitha Sahasranamam during archana. In the homam form, homam is conducted by ending each namam with Swaha: Homam is the most powerful form of offering and considered as the most revered solution for all problems of the man kind.

Music has so much power that it can free your ego. Through kirtan you can reach the highest pinnacle of spiritual experience. Not by yoga or by any other means but by kirtan alone can you have the vision of the Divine.

The tradition of naam sankirtan is very ancient. Naam means 'name', sam means 'complete' and kirtan is the chanting of simple mantras set to music, together in groups, with rhythm, energy and devotion. The prefix 'sam' implies that one should sing kirtan with full feeling (bhava), love (prem) and faith (shraddha). Naam sankirtan is one of the nine forms of bhakti. In Kali yuga, the present age, the simplest way of attaining peace and God is through naam sankirtan. "There is no other path, panacea or way out in the present era," says Sri Swamiji.

The singing of God's name is a science which has been perfected in India over thousands of years. It is a part of nada yoga, the yoga of sound, in which you produce sound waves and follow them with your awareness. Nad means 'flow of sound vibrations', yoga means 'to unite or merge with', so nada yoga is uniting or merging with these sound vibrations in an attempt to transcend the mind. Kirtan is mantra or eternal sound. When the mind becomes one with the nada or sound and the mantra, there is no difference between the mind and the mantra.

Mantras do not belong to any religion, caste or creed. They transcend all borders and the chanting of mantras associated with the various religions opens up the heart to an acceptance of the brotherhood of man. It is of little importance whether one sings Rama, Krishna, Chandi, Durga, Allah or Christ, as all are the names of the One Supreme Being. Singing these mantras to the accompaniment of music, with the correct pronunciation, beat, rhythm, tune and pitch, and with the whole heart, enables one to withdraw from the body and the external environment, leaving the mind and all the prejudices that go with it behind.

Swami Satyananda Saraswati has said, "In the past, I thought that if people wanted to learn yoga, then it should be taught to them. But now I say teach naam sankirtan to young and old. The whole atmosphere will be purified. There will be peace, happiness and well being wherever kirtan is sung. Kirtan will be the yoga of the 21st century. Just as you have taken an interest in yoga, you will also take an interest in kirtan. It is my dream."

Channelling the emotions
Emotions are the eyes through which you can experience a greater love and awareness. If you want to experience peace and God, you have to develop the emotional side of your nature.

Kirtan is concerned with the emotional personality. It bypasses the mind altogether. Emotions are very powerful tools in the hands of the aspirant, and one should conserve and channel the emotional energy very carefully. Through the intellect you cannot go very deep; you cannot realize the consciousness. But, using the fuel of the emotions through kirtan, you can just soar up beyond the mind like a plane taking off into the open night sky. However, the singing of kirtan is an art and not simply an emotional outburst. Neither is it only a song by means of which we express our feelings in an uncontrolled way. Rather, it is the means, the method, by which we can dive into our emotions, without any interference from the mind, and experience our inner expansiveness, our inner universe.

The singing of God's name is one way of developing bhakti or one-pointed devotion towards God. In fact, the relationship between devotee and God should start with singing of the name. Name or mantra is a method, but actually it is your own inner feeling, your emotion, that is important. These emotions, which are usually so unruly, uncontrollable and dissipated, can be focused and channelled towards the object of devotion or God through the means of naam sankirtan.

When one sings without ego, with fully focused awareness and intensity, straight from the seat of the emotions at anahata, one can ignite and unite the hearts of others/ and help them transcend through the combined power of the emotions. Regarding the emotions and kirtan, Sri Swamiji says, "When you practise kirtan you are travelling by the jet of emotions and therefore you do not confront the mind at all. If your emotions are charged just by hearing the name of God, you can go into a trance."

Bhava samadhi - trance
The point of singing God's name is divine intoxication, divine ecstasy. 'Harinaam ka pyala peekar aur pilakar ban ja tu matavala' - Drink the glass of wine filled with God's name yourself serve it to others and become ecstatic. If you could sing just one line of kirtan for three to four hours, you would go into bhava samadhi.

When total harmony between body, mind and prana takes place, together with the mantra, it is known as bhava samadhi, or ecstasy, where action and emotion fuse into one, and we develop awareness of the inner spirit, or atman. When kirtan is sung correctly with the right rhythm and harmony, it restructures the whole pranic flow, as the body and mind move with the rhythm of the music and mantra. If you continue singing kirtan with devotion in the same rhythm, slowly and steadily, and build to a climax very slowly, you will go into a trance, into bhava samadhi. Chaitanya

Mahaprabhu - and many other saints - used to move about in this state. Intoxicated by the name of God, he would be followed by a gathering of villagers, singing and dancing in ecstasy.

Effects of kirtan
God's name is like a detergent that cleans the karmas. It cleans the dross of the soul which you have accumulated during the course of this life and of many past lives. By constantly remembering the name, man can cross over the ocean of life to the other side. The Lord's name is the redeemer of all physical, mental and social illnesses.

Kirtan opens up the heart and purifies the atmosphere. As Sri Swamiji says, "It is like waving a stick of incense in the air." It creates such pure, positive energy that no evil spirits or negative influences can enter the environment where it is sung. In the house where kirtan is done regularly, both mental and physical sickness will be warded off. Kirtan is also the best way to relax and to raise your energy. It helps to make you free from tension, high blood pressure and other stress-related diseases, bringing about happiness and mental peace. So, when you come home tired and strained from a stressful day at the office, just sit down quietly, close your eyes and sing a few kirtans with your friends or family and see the effect.

Kirtan removes the fears, inhibitions, suppressions and neuroses, from which the people of the 21st century suffer so acutely. Regarding this Sri Swamiji says, "When you sing kirtan you must come down from the pulpit of the ego and think, 'I am nothing'. Then you can transcend the complexes and blocks. You should have no inhibitions about two things: eating and singing God's name."

Kirtan is a great aid to meditation. The higher the velocity, the lower the frequency and the higher the frequency, the lower the velocity. Velocity pertains to the mind, which is very active. The mind must lose its velocity and attain frequency. This is possible through kirtan. After singing kirtan for half an hour or an hour, the brainwaves slowly convert to alpha, so kirtan is an important method for obtaining pratyahara, the state in which the mind is withdrawn from the external senses and becomes tranquil. In this way many minds become as one mind. The brainwaves also affect the heart and blood circulation. In fact, the name of God influences both the mental and physical chemistry. After a session of kirtan it is very easy to concentrate the mind. In the words of Swami Satyananda, "Sing kirtan for about half an hour, then sit quietly for meditation. If you have involved yourself completely in the kirtan, when you sit for meditation you will find that the highway is clear. There will be no traffic jams on the mental plane."

Swami Sivananda was a great sankirtanist. He also developed a unique way of teaching through simple songs and kirtans (in both Hindi and English) into which he wove his fundamental teachings. According to Swami Sivananda, "Singing the names of God is the quickest, safest, cheapest, surest and best way to reach God." He had so much faith in the name that he used to turn up an hour early at his friends' functions just to purify the atmosphere with his kirtans.

Let us end with a message from him regarding the power of naam sankirtan: "Friend, the glory of the name of God cannot be established through reasoning. It can certainly be experienced through faith, devotion and constant repetition of the Name. Have reverence and faith for the Name. Every Name is filled with countless powers. Take refuge in the Name and cross this formidable ocean of birth and death. Name and nami (one who chants the name) are inseparable. Glory to the Lord. Glory to his Name."

The Glories of Sankirtan

Sankirtan brings darshan of God, or attainment of divine consciousness, in this Kali yuga. Sankirtan develops love. Sankirtan is the easiest, surest, safest, quickest way to attain God consciousness. Those who do sankirtan in the beginning for the sake of mental enjoyment will realize the purifying effects of sankirtan after some time and then they will themselves do it with bhava (intense feeling) and shraddha (faith). There is a mysterious power in the name of the Lord. Man cannot live on bread alone, but he can live on the name of the Lord.

The harmonious vibrations produced by the singing of the names of the Lord help the devotee to control the mind easily. They produce a benign influence on the mind. They elevate the mind at once from its old ruts or grooves to magnanimous heights of divine splendour and glory. If one does sankirtan from the bottom of one's heart with full bhava and prem (divine love), even the trees, birds and animals will be deeply influenced. They will respond. Such is the powerful influence of sankirtan. Rishis and siddhas visit the place where sankirtan is held. You can see brilliant lights all round the pandal where it is held.

The mind is purified by constant sankirtan. It is filled with good and pure thoughts. Daily sankirtan strengthens the good samskaras. The mind of a person who trains himself to think good, holy thoughts develops a tendency to think good thoughts. His character is moulded and transformed by continuous good thoughts. When the mind thinks of the image of God during sankirtan, the mental substance actually transforms into the form of the image of God. The impression of the object is left in the mind. This is a samskara. When the act is repeated very often, the samskara gains strength by repetition and a tendency or habit is formed in the mind. One who entertains thoughts of divinity actually becomes transformed into the divinity by constant thinking and meditation. The bhava and disposition is purified and divinized. The meditator and the meditated, the worshipper and the worshipped, the thinker and the thought, become one and the same. This is samadhi. This is the fruit of sankirtan.

Love - the answer to God's mystery
God is a mystery. The mind is a mystery. The world is a mystery. How sankirtan transmutes human nature into divine nature, how it overhauls the old vicious samskaras, how it changes the mental substance, how it transforms or metamorphoses the demonic, asuric nature into the pure sattwic nature and how it brings the devotee face to face with God is also a mystery. Science and reason can hardly explain the modus operandi of sankirtan. Reason is an imperfect instrument; reason cannot explain many of life's mysteries.

Love or prem is a mighty power. It indeed exercises a wonderful power over the beings that come under its masterful influence. Love is a great leveller. The lover and the beloved are placed on the same level. All differences between the two vanish. Pure unselfish love can turn God into a human and a human into God. There is no power on earth greater than love. Rules are broken by the power of love.

Love is the immediate way to truth or the kingdom of God or the vast domain of perennial peace and joy. It is the life-principle of creation. It is the highest expression or soul force. It is the magic wand with which the devotee conquers the whole world.

Kirtan @ Yoga For Peace Day - Edgewood Park New Haven CT 9/8/07

Dear Friends -

A reminder that this Saturday, September 8 is Yoga for Peace day at Edgewood Park in New Haven CT. People will gather to do yoga for 2 hours with the intention of increasing peace within and without. Registration is 11 to noon. Yoga is from noon to 2.

Kirtan chanting will be happening throughout the yoga practice. Please join me if you can to chant. Bhakti yoga masters say that when people chant together the power of the mantra is multipled by a hundred for each one chanting! So let's chant together for peace.

The gazebo at Edgewood Park is where this will be happening. The gazebo is near the intersection of West Rock Avenue and Whalley Avenue. I hope to see you there.

There is a small fee if you are doing the asanas. I don't believe there is a fee if you are there just to chant. For more information on Yoga for Peace Day visit their site at:

Join us on August 18th for the 2nd West Marin Himalayan Festival featuring:

Vandhana Dance Company will perform North Indian Kathak dance featuring Megan Black who trained under Smt. Kumudini Lakhia, one of the foremost Kathak exponents in India today. Michael Davis, who has been seen on All India Television and at the Center for World Music in Madras, will perform Carnatic bamboo flute, a South Indian tradition accompanied by Douglas Vurek, who studied with South Indian percussion legend Palghat Mani Iyer on mridangam.

Singer and dancer Tsering Wangmo and artist Ang Tsherin Sherpa , who will headline the 2nd West Marin Himalayan Festival at the San Geronimo Valley Community Center on Saturday August 18th from 11-5pm, share more than their passion for their chosen art forms, both are internationally-recognized leaders at the forefront of the effort to preserve Tibet's cultural heritage.

Ang Tsherin Sherpa, a renowned third generation Thangka (sacred banners) painter who has shown in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco twice and whose painting “Green Tara” is owned by actor Richard Gere, will provide an all-day demonstration of this sacred art form with hourly art talks. He has had murals commissioned by Monasteries, has been shown and collected internationally and teaches in Marin and other parts of the Bay Area. He and his father Urgen Dorje are working to preserve the tradition of Thangka painting and plan to open a school to train people of all ages and backgrounds in Thangka painting in Nepal, where Dorje is based. Commenting on his work Sherpa says, ”The strict tradition of Thangka painting teaches one how to view oneself as a channel through which all the deities manifest. There’s room for self-expression in Thangka painting but the actual practice is to eliminate the self clinging to ego.” ¬

The visual arts component of the Festival has expanded substantially with the all-day Thangka demonstration as well as a entire gallery devoted to a show by Fairfax-based Nepali contemporary painter, Sunila Bajracharya. Her work has been collected and shown internationally including at the 10th Asia Biennial Bangladesh, 5th International Art Exhibition at Gallery Dikmayer in Berlin, and as part of a special online exhibition of the International Museum of Women. Attendees will be able to meet Bajracharya at the Festival where she will be on hand to answer questions and discuss her work.

Additional performances include traditional Tibetan music and dance from the children’s performance group of the Tibetan Association of Northern California who are saving these traditions for the coming generations.

Event attendees are welcome to create their own Tibetan art in the Prayer Flag making activity. There will be kid-oriented activities and toys for children 0-5 available. There are also 3 playgrounds on our campus outside the event area. Authentic meals, snacks and beverages will be available including mouth-watering traditional handmade Tibetan Momos (dumplings) and more food to be announced. what is Kirtan?

The basic process of Kirtan as I understand it goes something like this: you sing with an intention to bring about a particular experience. The practice can be more refined by educating ones intention on one side and/or educating one's use of language and/or music on the other side.

The Tzolkin: Music for positive planetary consciousness and change.

Twenty years ago, I was sitting in my little studio in Los Angeles, CA, sequencing and recording the first acoustic translations of the Mayan Sacred Calendar, the Tzolkin, and shifting into what was being called the "Harmonic Convergence." Throughout the convergence, the acoustic translations of the Tzolkin's 20 Sacred Signs were being broadcast through my house and yard via the only radio transmission system accessible to me at the time, an el cheapo walkie talkie. Lolol... Hey, gotta do what ya gotta do and, having "coincidentally" translated the Tzolkin into sound only months before, my intention was to insure that the planet's ethereal body received both the galactic radio transmission and a local radio transmission of the [concentrated] Tzolkin's currents, simultaneously. It was the least I could do for the planet and, although I had the least of the consumer broadcasting possibilities, I got the job done. (A little leaven leavens the whole loaf.) Since that auspicious transit, the world's consciousness has followed a predicted course toward collective enlightenment, on and relative to all levels of society. Now, here we are, 20 years later, poised on the precipice of (and rapidly accelerating into) the most profound shift in planetary consciousness the world has ever experienced. Fortunately, the ancient Maya priests who foresaw this time also perceived and left us the Tzolkin as a tool to help us transit this period successfully.

Here is the fundamental value of the Tzolkin; it is a Key unlocking the Archetypal Properties embodied in cycles of the 4th dimension, Time, that enable us to ascend into higher levels of Life and being human (in the Highest sense of the word). Time is about periodicity, frequency. Basically, Consciousness, the All in all, uses Time to effect change in the 3rd, 2nd and 1st dimensions. The Tzolkin is a map of how Consciousness does so relative to the expression of specific Aspects of Itself. The Tzolkin is a table of the Logic embodying specific, cyclic Patterns of Time facilitating the expression of those Aspects through all states of manifestation via electromagnetic radiation. When those Patterns are expressed in their purest Form, i.e. electromagnetic frequency, e.g. sound or light, that expression effects a psychoactive, ethereal bridge to the 4th dimension and the Consciousness that generates, progresses and sustains all that is.

At this time, the world understands the principals of using complimentary sounds to effect brain synchronization and cognitive enhancement. Now, we understand the validity of using tone to effect remarkable physiological and psychological shifts. Furthermore, we not only accept, we embrace the mathematical plausibility of a multidimensional universe beyond the accepted 4 dimensions; length, width, height/depth and time. Today, we understand the unity of these dimensions and of all things in such a way that we can comprehend how certain harmonic patterns transmitted in the 3D expression of Life may effect links to their concurrent Life expressions in the 4D, 5D and higher realms. We understand that sound can be used to effect vibrational states whereby higher levels of perception and informations are obtained. And now, as a result of the Tzolkin acoustic translations, we are capable of taking an ordinary CD and tangibly applying dynamics of the 4th dimension to radically and positively progress individual and communal consciousness, health and vitality.

Jesus (the Christ, not Martinez) said "They that have ears to hear, let them hear." He knew not everyone was prepared to hear the enlightening Truth that Consciousness was pouring through him, nevertheless, he spoke so those who could hear It would have the opportunity to do so. I'm sure there are many people reading this who are dismissing the above as New Age delusion, at best, and that does not negate the validity of what I'm sharing, nor of my experience and the experiences of many others who have used the Tzolkin acoustic translations. At one point, we lacked the instruments to confirm we live in an heliocentric planetary system, that information can be transmitted across open air without wires, that our cells are individual microcomputers. We may not have the instruments required to validate string theory or the practical linking of our 3D experience to the vital currents of the 4th and higher dimensions using sound and/or light, however we will. Those who do or may understand and are seeking the value of the easily applied tools for personal enhancement such as the Tzolkin translations (who share this online community) deserve to hear now, and they can.

The Power of Intentional Sound:
Thoughts On the World Sound Healing Day

In tantric Buddhism, or the energy-practices of consciousness, the primordial sound "AH" is associated with the throat center and the action of "enlightened speech."
On World Sound Healing Day, we are being given an opportunity to join others all over the planet to create a conscious sound-wave for world peace. And we will do this by making the sound "AH" for five minutes, either silently or out-loud, either alone or in groups, as our situation allows.
How will this work?
First of all, let's take a look at it from the 'esoteric' or hidden tradition. From this perspective, the throat chakra is associated with the power of creation and the expression of personal will. When we speak, we are using the inherent power of this energy-center. And when we speak with conscious intention, the creations of this center carry the vibrational essence of our intention, in other words, intention put into sound.
As I said at the beginning, the "AH" sound is associated with "enlightened speech." What do I mean by this rather exotic term? Well there are many ways of describing it, but for our purposes I think we can say this - it is joining the creative power of our voices with the wisdom power of our hearts. The wisdom power of our hearts has many aspects, but primarily it is the power to generate compassion. And to speak in ways that are compassionate in nature.
Compassion means literally "to feel with." Thus, when we feel compassion for someone, either ourselves or another, we are feeling with that person. Compassion brings with it the recognition that we are all in the same boat so to speak. We are all in the world of duality and we all suffer from time to time. When we see suffering around us, compassion creates an immediate response of connection. Compassion is not pity. Feeling sorry for someone is actually a kind of spiritual superiority. We feel higher than someone when we pity them.
Compassion is different. It is the heart-felt recognition that we are all connected by virtue of our humanity and what happens to one of us, in some inexplicable way, happens to all of us. Whether we are aware of this or not, is another question.
Now in order for the "AH" sound of creation to do anything other than sound interesting, we have to align it with a positive feeling. It is this union of creative intention with feeling that moves energy into manifestation. If we just make an "AH" sound without conscious intention, it is rather wasted effort. The trick is that the intention has to be held in the heart, not so much in the mind.
In the 'esoteric' traditions of Buddhism, the heart is the residing place of our wisdom-mind. And it is through the heart that we can sense the underlying interconnectedness of ourselves with all beings. In the Christian and Muslim traditions, the heart is also the residing place of wisdom and holds the capacity to express love.
For those of you who may not have a particular spiritual lineage to explain the hidden powers of the heart, let me offer some recent scientific evidence.
First of all, it has been found that the electromagnetic fields of the heart are stronger than those of the brain. In fact, they are 30-60 times stronger. And there is evidence that when we feel strong emotions our electromagnetic fields 'broadcast' these feelings to other biological systems, especially those of humans and higher mammals.
Think of yourself as adding your positive feelings to the planetary broadcast of peace, and you will have some idea of what we are doing here.
If you would like to further explore the scientific understanding of emotion and sound, I would refer you to two sources: the work of Manfred Clynes and the research of the Heart Math Institute. You can find both of these by going to an Internet search engine such as www.google.com.
As we prepare to join our voices to the planetary sound-wave that we will all be creating, it is important that we make contact with a positive feeling from the heart. For some this may be compassion which arises naturally from enlightened states of mind. But for many of us, this might be difficult especially if we are in mental and/or emotional turmoil.
Having studied the effects of positive feelings and their affects on consciousness for many years, I have found a particular feeling-state quite easy for most people to access. I call that state appreciation.
Physiological studies on the effects of appreciation are quite interesting and show that it has very positive effects on the heart, brain function and our immune systems. It is a highly coherent emotion and one ideally suited to our peace efforts through the use of conscious-sound.
Some of you, no doubt, know quite easily how to use this positive feeling-state, but in case you don't, here's a brief suggestion.
You don't need to have a reason to feel appreciation. You can self-generate it. Just remember the feeling. Or if that is too difficult, recall something in your past that you feel appreciation for. Then let the content of the memory drop away, so that you are left with just the feeling. It's that simple.
I strongly suggest you try practicing this a few times before the actual World Sound Healing Day, so that you 'know' how to do it on demand. Then when you start to make your sound for peace, connect to this feeling. Actually put your awareness in your heart center, either your heart chakra or your physical heart, and recall the feeling of appreciation.
As you make the "AH" sound, let it come out of, so to speak, this feeling of appreciation. Imagine yourself sending your sound out to the entire planet. Imagine your voice joining thousands, if not tens of thousands of people all over the globe. Let your feeling of appreciation for life join with theirs. Know that you are broadcasting a powerful feeling-state throughout the planet. The gift of love and appreciation is the greatest gift we can give, especially in this most perilous time.
Know that your efforts will have an effect. Exactly what, we might not know for sometime. But every conscious creation of love given to the web of life has a positive effect.
Bless you for joining us. May we all be lifted up, and may we all attain our highest destinies.

Dear Reader,

Where I come from is not as important as where I am right now. Or where I am going.
To say what style of music I create is almost futile, because these things have changed. And will change. The fingerprint of my music is my voice.
The style of my songs is not as much a genre, but personal statements of an emotional nature. Who I am as a person, and how I feel and translate things inside of me.
I seek out sounds from all places. From distant countries and cultures, to things very near and close. The senses, memories, hopes, ideas, emotions. To create songs that are delicate as spider webs, and as strong as love.
My first language is english. But lately I have been writing in spanish and portuguese. Or other languages. (some possibly newly created). The world is a vast and beautiful place, and I want to reach my hand out as far as it can go. To touch both sides of duality, and bring it together in the most terrible and beautiful chaos of one kiss.

Maya is currently in the studio working with Karl Berger, a composer, arranger, conductor, and co-producer known for his innovative arrangements for Jeff Buckley, Natalie Merchant, collaborations with producers such as Bill Laswell, and world musicical communications.

Maya lives in New york City and plays for people there and elsewhere.

Morning Artik Song?

Long time ago I lived in the Atlanta temple, and my favorite part of the day was the morning artik, and the song that is traditionally sung. Regretably, my memory fails me as to the name of the song. Would love to get the name, and perhaps find out how to obtain a media file of it.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Who Can Chant Gayatri Mantra?

This has come up alot in talks with friends in the last few weeks about kirtan groups in the west on chanting the Gayatri Mantra. I am posting this letter here to see every ones views on this.

KAUAI, HAWAII, December 24, 2006: An issue came up at the Hindu Mission of Canada in Quebec regarding the chanting of the famed Gayatri Mantra by the ordinary devotees. Some brahmins held the position that the mantra should chanted by everyone only when a priest is leading the chant. The chairman of the mission, Dharam Pal Verman, asked Hinduism Today to research the issue. We, in turn, asked our Delhi correspondent, Rajiv Malik, to consult with experts in India. He reported the following points:

1. The chanting of Gayatri Mantra collectively in large groups is something very common place in the temples and Arya Samajas all over India. It takes place everyday. No one ever objects to non-brahmins joining the priests and other brahmins in this chanting of the Gayatri Mantra.

2. In an earlier interview with Hinduism Today, the Shankaracharya of Puri said that mantras need to be chanted by common people in an extremely careful manner so th at they do not get harmed by the high level of energy generated in the process of chanting them.

3. In consultation with Swami Pragyanand of Delhi, who is a big promoter of Gayatri Mantra, Swami said:

a. "Gayatri mantra is for everybody. Why I say this is because every mantra has a devata and in the case of Gayatri Mantra, the devata or God is the Sun God. Now the Sun God is for every creature in this world. therefore gayatri is also for everybody in this world. Gayatri is also known as mother and again mother is for everyone and therefore Gayatri is for every child of God. Anything which is created by God is for everybody, whereas if a man creates something it may be used for the benefit of some people only.

b. "In Bhagavad Gita lord Krishna said that among mantras I am myself the Gayatri Mantra. So how can anybody be deprived of chanting the Gayatri Mantra?

c. "The essence of Gayatri Mantra is that God may grant wisdom to all. Now wisdom is not a monopoly of any one person, state, religion or sect. Therefore as wisdom is for everybody, Gayatri Mantra is also for everybody.

d. "When I went to Surinam in South America for the first time, in some of the temples they did not allow chanting of Gayatri Mantra. But when I explained the meaning and essence of Gayatri Mantra to the people there, they got convinced and the things changed. Today, a few radio stations have a round-the-clock recitation of Gayatri Mantra."

e. Asked about the point of view of the Puri Shankaracharya, Swami said that as the Shankaracharya was of orthodox views therefore he held this kind of opinion on this matter. In an earlier case, the Puri Shankaracharya objected to women chanting the Vedas.

Unwavering Stillness and Bliss

Namaskar Kirtan and Bhajan family...

When singing kirtan and bhajans my mind reaches a very still unwavering blissful state.
Most of the time, I feel this method of sadhana takes me closer to the goal than meditation, reading scriptures and sometimes even doing japa or performing pujas.

Anybody else share this experience with me? If not, what is the sadhana you perform in your life that brings you closest to a state of unwavering stillness and bliss?

BG 12.6-7: But those who worship Me, giving up all their activities unto Me and being devoted to Me without deviation, engaged in devotional service and always meditating upon Me, having fixed their minds upon Me, O son of Pṛthā — for them I am the swift deliverer from the ocean of birth and death.

I love and try to help people, especially females because they say, " I can't eat nuts , they are hard on my stomach and Yada, yada,yada" :).
Well, Injesting toxins will make things difficult for you.
Stretching your body everyday will allow your soul to shine.
In ten years, I have run through every diet. Raw was the last one and when I became tired because of lack of B's, I would take a B supplement www.newchapter.info - organic .
Vegetables are not necessary. "Though shall not kill" was passed on in the beginning and harvesting vegetables kills the earth.
Slowly take your time and allow your body to adjust to a new diet. I feel everyone is capable.

began to dance and chant, "Krsna!"

nace--dance; kunde--jump; vyaghra-gana--the tigers; mrgi-gana-sange--with the

-with great wonder.

When all the tigers and does danced and jumped, Balabhadra Bhattacarya saw
them and was struck with wonder.

vyaghra-mrga anyonye kare alingana
mukhe mukha diya kare anyonye cumbana

vyaghra-mrga--the tigers and deer; anyonye--one another; kare--do; alingana--
embracing; mukhe mukha diya--touching one anothers' mouths; kare--do; anyonye
cumbana--kissing one another.

Indeed, the tigers and deer began to embrace one another, and, touching
mouths, they began to kiss.

kautuka dekhiya prabhu hasite lagila
ta-sabake tahan chadi' age cali' gela

kautuka dekhiya--seeing this fun; prabhu--Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu; hasite
lagila--began to smile; ta-sabake--all of them; tahan chadi'--leaving there;
age--forward; cali' gela--advanced.

When Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu saw all this fun, He began to smile. Finally He
left the animals and continued on His way.

mayuradi paksi-gana prabhure dekhiya
sange cale, 'krsna' bali' nace matta hana

mayura-adi--beginning with peacocks; paksi-gana--different types of birds;
prabhure--Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu; dekhiya--seeing; sange cale--go with Him;
krsna bali'--chanting the holy name of Krsna; nace--dance; matta hana--becoming
mad.

Various birds, including the peacock, saw Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and began
to follow Him, chanting and dancing. They were all maddened by the holy name of
Krsna.

'hari-bola' bali' prabhu kare ucca-dhvani
vrksa-lata----praphullita, sei dhvani suni'

hari-bola--the vibration of Hari-bol; bali'--chanting; prabhu--Sri Caitanya
Mahaprabhu; kare--makes; ucca-dhvani--a loud sound; vrksa-lata--the trees and
creepers; praphullita--very jubilant; sei--that; dhvani--sound; suni'--hearing.

When the Lord loudly chanted "Hari bol!" the trees and creepers became
jubilant to hear Him.

The loud chanting of the Hare Krsna mantra is so powerful that it can even
penetrate the ears of trees and creepers-what to speak of animals and human
beings. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu once asked Haridasa Thakura how trees and plants
could be delivered, and Haridasa Thakura replied that the loud chanting of the
Hare Krsna maha-mantra would benefit not only trees and plants but insects and
all other living beings. One should therefore not be disturbed by the loud
chanting of Hare Krsna, for it is beneficial not only to the chanter but to
everyone who gets an opportunity to hear.

'jharikhande' sthavara-jangama ache yata
krsna-nama diya kaila premete unmatta

jharikhande--in the place known as Jharikhanda; sthavara-jangama--moving and
not moving; ache--there are; yata--all; krsna-nama diya--giving them the holy
name of Lord Krsna; kaila--made; premete--in ecstasy; unmatta--mad.

Thus all living entities-some moving and some standing still in the forest of
Jharikhanda-became maddened by hearing the holy name of Lord Krsna vibrated by
Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
