studying music in india

I'm starting to research my first trip to India, possibly January 09. Leaning toward the northern part of the country. Any recommendations on where I might be able to study classical music as a beginner? Also interested in Kirtan? I am well schooled in Western/European Music and have chanted for a few years in the yoga community.

    There is a university of music at Khairagarh, State: Chhatisgarh. Try to find out details from net, if you dont get write to me I will gather details and send it to u.
