Re: please help finish this
Sun, April 1, 2007 - 10:59 AMPurport to Pañca-tattva Mahā-mantra
by His Divine Grace
A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is always accompanied by His plenary expansion Śrī Nityānanda Prabhu, His incarnation Śrī Advaita Prabhu, His internal potency Śrī Gadādhara Prabhu, and His marginal potency Śrīvāsa Prabhu. He is in the midst of them as the Supreme Personality of Godhead. One should know that Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is always accompanied by these other tattvas. Therefore our obeisances to Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu are complete when we say, śrī-kṛṣṇa-caitanya prabhu nityānanda śrī-advaita gadādhara śrīvāsādi-gaura-bhakta-vṛnda. As preachers of the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement, we first offer our obeisances to Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu by chanting this Pañca-tattva mantra; then we say, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare/ Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare. There are ten offenses in the chanting of the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra, but these are not considered in the chanting of the Pañca-tattva mantra, namely, śrī-kṛṣṇa-caitanya prabhu nityānanda śrī-advaita gadādhara śrīvāsādi-gaura-bhakta-vṛnda. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is known as mahā-vadānyāvatāra, the most magnanimous incarnation, for He does not consider the offenses of the fallen souls. Thus to derive the full benefit of the chanting of the mahā-mantra (Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare/ Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare), we must first take shelter of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, learn the Pañca-tattva mantra, and then chant the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra. That will be very effective. -

Re: please help finish this
Mon, April 2, 2007 - 4:18 AMHare Krishna
Please accept my humble obeisances
All glories to Srila Prabhupada
The 10 aparadhas can be found in the Caitanya Caritamrita Adi lila, Chapter 8, Text 24. It is from the Padma Purana:
Sri Caitanya Caritamrita Adi 8.24
'krishna-nama' kare aparadhera vicara
krishna balile aparadhira na haya vikara
SYNONYMS
krishna-nama -- the holy name of Lord Krishna; kare -- takes; aparadhera -- of offenses; vicara -- consideration; krishna -- Lord Krishna; balile -- if one chants; aparadhira -- of the offenders; na -- never; haya -- becomes; vikara -- changed.
TRANSLATION
There are offenses to be considered while chanting the Hare Krishna mantra. Therefore simply by chanting Hare Krishna one does not become ecstatic.
PURPORT
It is very beneficial to chant the names sri-krishna-caitanya prabhu-nityananda before chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra because by chanting these two holy names -- sri-krishna-caitanya prabhu-nityananda -- one immediately becomes ecstatic, and if he then chants the Hare Krishna maha-mantra he becomes free of offenses.
There are ten offenses to avoid in chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra. The first offense is to blaspheme great personalities who are engaged in distributing the holy name of the Lord. It is said in the sastra (Cc. Antya 7.11), krishna-sakti vina nahe tara pravartana: one cannot distribute the holy names of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra unless he is empowered by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore one should not criticize or blaspheme a devotee who is thus engaged.
Sri Padma Purana states:
satam ninda namnah paramam aparadham vitanute
yatah khyatim yatam katham u sahate tad-vigarham
To blaspheme the great saintly persons who are engaged in preaching the glories of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra is the worst offense at the lotus feet of the holy name. One should not criticize a preacher of the glories of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra. If one does so, he is an offender. The Nama-prabhu, who is identical with Krishna, will never tolerate such blasphemous activities, even from one who passes as a great devotee.
The second namaparadha is described as follows:
sivasya sri-vishnor ya iha guna-namadi-sakalam
dhiya bhinnam pasyet sa khalu hari-namahita-karah
In this material world, the holy name of Vishnu is all-auspicious. Vishnu's name, form, qualities and pastimes are all transcendental, absolute knowledge. Therefore, if one tries to separate the Absolute Personality of Godhead from His holy name or His transcendental form, qualities and pastimes, thinking them to be material, that is offensive. Similarly, to think that the names of demigods such as Lord Siva are as good as the name of Lord Vishnu -- or, in other words, to think that Lord Siva and the other demigods are other forms of God and therefore equal to Vishnu -- is also blasphemous. This is the second offense at the lotus feet of the holy name of theLord.
The third offense at the lotus feet of the holy name, which is called guror avajna, is to consider the spiritual master to be material and therefore to envy his exalted position. The fourth offense (sruti-sastra-nindanam) is to blaspheme Vedic literatures such as the four Vedas and the Puranas. The fifth offense (artha-vadah) is to consider the glories of the holy name to be exaggerations. Similarly, the sixth offense (hari-namni kalpanam) is to consider the holy name of the Lord to be imaginary.
The seventh offense is described as follows:
namno balad yasya hi papa-buddhir
na vidyate tasya yamair hi suddhih
To think that since the Hare Krishna mantra can counteract all sinful reactions one may therefore go on with his sinful activities and at the same time chant the Hare Krishna mantra to neutralize them is the greatest offense at the lotus feet of hari-nama.
The eighth offense is stated thus:
dharma-vrata-tyaga-hutadi-sarva-
subha-kriya-samyam api pramadah
It is offensive to consider the chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra to be a religious ritualistic ceremony. Performing religious ceremonies, following vows and practicing renunciation and sacrifice are all materialistic auspicious activities. The chanting of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra must not be compared to such materialistic religiosity. This is an offense at the lotus feet of the holy name of the Lord.
The ninth offense is described as follows:
asraddadhane vimukhe 'py asrinvati
yas copadesah siva-namaparadhah
It is an offense to preach the glories of the holy name among persons who have no intelligence or no faith in the subject matter. Such people should be given the chance to hear the chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra, but in the beginning they should not be instructed about the glories or the spiritual significance of the holy name. By constant hearing of the holy name, their hearts will be purified, and then they will be able to understand the transcendental position of the holy name.
The tenth offense is as follows:
srute 'pi nama-mahatmye yah priti-rahito narah
aham-mamadi-paramo namni so 'py aparadha-krit
If one has heard the glories of the transcendental holy name of the Lord but nevertheless continues in a materialistic concept of life, thinking "I am this body and everything belonging to this body is mine [aham mameti SB 5.5.8]," and does not show respect and love for the chanting of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra, that is an offense.
also;
The ten offences against the Holy Name to be avoided are enumerated in the Padma Purāṇa:
satāṁ ninda-namnaḥ param aparādham vitanute
yataḥ khyātiṁ yātaṁ katham u sahate tad vigarhām
śivasya śrī visnor ya iha
guṇa nāmādi sakalam
dhiyā bhinnaṁ paśyet sa khalu
hari-nāmāhitakaraḥ
guror avajñā śruti-śāstra-nindanaṁ
tathārthavādo hari nāmni kalpanam
nāmno balād yasya hi pāpabuddhi
na vidyate yasya yamair hi śuddhiḥ
dharma-vrata-tyaga-hutādi-sarva-
subha-kriyā sāmyam api pramādaḥ
aśraddadhāne vimukhe’py aśṛṇvati
yas copadeṣaḥ śiva-nāmāparādhaḥ
śrute’pi nāma-māhātmye yah prīti rahito naraḥ
ahaṁ mamādi paramo nāmni so’py aparādha-kṛt
"The ten offences against the Holy Name are: (1) To blaspheme saintly devotees who have dedicated their lives for propagating the glories of the Holy Name. (2) To consider demigods as being independent of the Supreme Lord’s control or equal to Him. (3) To disobey the orders of the spiritual master and other elevated Vaiṣṇavas. (4) To disrespect the revealed scriptures. (5) To consider the glories of the Holy Name as exaggerated or imaginary. (6) To give some concocted interpretation on the meanings of the Holy Name. (7) To commit sinful activities on the strength of the Holy Name. (8) To think the chanting of the Holy Name is like other pious deeds. (9) To reveal the glories or give initiation into the chanting of the Holy Name to the faithless. And, (10), even after hearing the glories of the Holy Name, to not have faith in the chanting and maintain material attachments."
and your verse is from Srimad Bhagavatam 1.13.46
kala-karma-gunadhino
deho 'yam panca-bhautikah
katham anyams tu gopayet
sarpa-grasto yatha param
SYNONYMS
kala -- eternal time; karma -- action; guna -- modes of nature; adhinah -- under the control of; dehah -- material body and mind; ayam -- this; panca-bhautikah -- made of the five elements; katham -- how; anyan -- others; tu -- but; gopayet -- give protection; sarpa-grastah -- one who is bitten by the snake; yatha -- as much as; param -- others.
TRANSLATION
This gross material body made of five elements is already under the control of eternal time [kala], action [karma] and the modes of material nature [guna]. How, then, can it, being already in the jaws of the serpent, protect others?
PURPORT
The world's movements for freedom through political, economic, social, and cultural propaganda can do no benefit to anyone, for they are controlled by superior power. A conditioned living being is under the full control of material nature, represented by eternal time and activities under the dictation of different modes of nature. There are three material modes of nature, namely goodness, passion and ignorance. Unless one is situated in the mode of goodness, one cannot see things as they are. The passionate and the ignorant cannot even see things as they are. Therefore a person who is passionate and ignorant cannot direct his activities on the right path. Only the man in the quality of goodness can help to a certain extent. Most persons are passionate and ignorant, and therefore their plans and projects can hardly do any good to others. Above the modes of nature is eternal time, which is called kala because it changes the shape of everything in the material world. Even if we are able to do something temporarily beneficial, time will see that the good project is frustrated in course of time. The only thing possible to be done is to get rid of eternal time, kala, which is compared to kala-sarpa, or the cobra snake, whose bite is always lethal. No one can be saved from the bite of a cobra. The best remedy for getting out of the clutches of the cobralike kala or its integrity, the modes of nature, is bhakti-yoga, as it is recommended in the Bhagavad-gita (14.26). The highest perfectional project of philanthropic activities is to engage everyone in the act of preaching bhakti-yoga all over the world because that alone can save the people from the control of maya, or the material nature represented by kala, karma and guna, as described above. The Bhagavad-gita (14.26) confirms this definitely.

Re: please help finish this
Fri, April 13, 2007 - 5:25 PMIs this a question? if it is then the answer is yes. There are however different categories of names of God, specifically Gauna, Mukhya, and Madhurya
Gauna are principle names of the Lord that are transcendental to the this world and are related to His personal lilas
Mukhya are names that came about at the time of creation, such as Jagatpati-Creator of the Universe. Names that are not dealing with the eternal character of the Lord but rather temporary manifestations of the Lord do not grant the same benifit.
The benefit of Mukhya nama is liberation, material elevation, and piety. But the supreme goal of nama sadhana, namely Krishna Prema (Pure Love of the Lord in personal relationship) does arise. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.Unsu...

Re: please help finish this
Sat, April 14, 2007 - 7:27 PMyes
The 'Harinama Cintamani' explains two categories of holy names: mukhya nama (primary) and gauna nama (secondary).
"The holy names of the Lord that describe His transcendental pastimes are defined as principal names. Chanting these names reveals Krishna's eternal pastimes, gives Krishna Prema (pure unadulterated love of the Lord) and eternal residence in Vrindavan. Primary or or principle names include Govinda, Gopala, Rama, Sri Nandanandana, Radha-natha, Hari, Yashomati pranadhana, Mandana Mohana, Shyamasundara, Madhava, Gopinatha, Vrajagopal" (Harinama-Cintamani)
"Primary names are fully transcendental, identical with the svarupa of the Lord, and remain eternally in the spiritual world. The Lord's names descend to the material world to destroy the influence of maya (illusion). Secondeary names, however, have been introduced from the creation of the material universe. Names such as Srishti-Karta (creator of the universe), Jagat-pati (controller of the universe) and Paramatma (Localized supersoul) describe God from the perspective of the conditioned souls and how He relates to them." (Nama-Bhajana)
"Secondary names describe the Lord's functions and affiliation with His material energy (e.g. Brahman, Paramatma, Ishvara, or as the Christians say, creator, maintainer, and annihilator.) Such names of the Lord are invoked by 'karmis' and 'jnanis' and not bhaktas. Chanting secondary names of the Lord gives piety, material elevation and salvation. However, Krishna-prema, the most perfect result of chanting the holy name of the Lord, is attained only by purely chanting Krishna's principle names. This is because the secondary names, although also impregnated with the Lord's pastime potencies, have it in partial degrees only." (Harinama-Cintamani)
Why doesn't secondary names give prema? Secondary names are distant, incomplete, and somewhat impersonal. Hence, they are devoid of the personal expression of Krishna's mercy and love. There is no expression of prema in gauna nama because they have no lila or pastimes within them.

Sun, April 15, 2007 - 10:07 AMYeah, like if someone came up to me and called me by one of my old nicknames or by a name that someone once called me that I never really considered to be my own name, it wouldn't mean the same as if someone knew the actual name that I was going by. I can't speak for Krsna, but I can imagine how he might feel that way too.
Like if I went up to Nityananada Ram Das and said, "Hey Mac," he might not really want to respond. -

Re: please help finish this
Sun, April 15, 2007 - 1:26 PMkind the idea, it is like calling your friend who happens to own a company "boss" although it is true, by just addressing his external position, and not his personal attributes, the love becomes hampered.
God is not just the Creator or the Maintainer, or Destroyer, but really is a being that is personal and capable of all relationships such as friendship and even conjugal.
He is therefore known as Rasaraja, the king of all relationships. All varieties of Rasa, or flavors of relationships, are experienced by the Lord.
Love become more intimate when one can see past the Lord's opulence and power, and see His sweetness of character.
Secondary names, like boss, are not bad, in fact one can be liberated from this material world by chanting such names, but pure love, the best goal, will not arise in the heart. -

Mon, April 16, 2007 - 7:47 PMI found this nice verse today that is related and I thought to share it.
Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 10.8.45 Canto 10: The Summum Bonum Chapter 8: Lord Kṛṣṇa Shows the Universal Form Within His Mouth
trayyā copaniṣadbhiś ca
sāńkhya-yogaiś ca sātvataiḥ
upagīyamāna-māhātmyaḿ
hariḿ sāmanyatātmajam
SYNONYMS
trayyā — by studying the three Vedas (Sāma, Yajur and Atharva); ca — also; upaniṣadbhiḥ ca — and by studying the Vedic knowledge of the Upaniṣads; sāńkhya-yogaiḥ — by reading the literature of sāńkhya-yoga; ca — and; sātvataiḥ — by the great sages and devotees, or by reading Vaiṣṇava-tantra, Pañcarātras; upagīyamāna-māhātmyam — whose glories are worshiped (by all these Vedic literatures); harim — unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead; sā — she; amanyata — considered (ordinary); ātmajam — as her own son.
TRANSLATION
The glories of the Supreme Personality of Godhead are studied through the three Vedas, the Upaniṣads, the literature of Sāńkhya-yoga, and other Vaiṣṇava literature, yet mother Yaśodā considered that Supreme Person her ordinary child.
PURPORT
As stated in Bhagavad-gītā (15.15) by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, the purpose of studying the Vedas is to understand Him (vedaiś ca sarvair aham eva vedyaḥ). Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu explained to Sanātana Gosvāmī that there are three purposes in the Vedas. One is to understand our relationship with Kṛṣṇa (sambandha), another is to act according to that relationship (abhidheya), and the third is to reach the ultimate goal (prayojana). The word prayojana means "necessities," and the ultimate necessity is explained by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. premā pum-artho mahān: the greatest necessity for a human being is the achievement of love for the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Here we see that mother Yaśodā is on the highest stage of necessity, for she is completely absorbed in love for Kṛṣṇa.
In the beginning, the Vedic purpose is pursued in three ways (trayī) — by karma-kāṇḍa, jñāna-kāṇḍa and upāsanā-kāṇḍa. When one reaches the complete, perfect stage of upāsanā-kāṇḍa, one comes to worship Nārāyaṇa, or Lord Viṣṇu. When Pārvatī asked Lord Mahādeva, Lord Śiva, what is the best method of upāsanā, or worship, Lord Śiva answered, ārādhanānāḿ sarveṣāḿ viṣṇor ārādhanaḿ param. Viṣṇūpāsanā, or viṣṇv-ārādhana, worship of Lord Viṣṇu, is the highest stage of perfection, as realized by Devakī. But here mother Yaśodā performs no upāsanā, for she has developed transcendental ecstatic love for Kṛṣṇa. Therefore her position is better than that of Devakī. In order to show this, Śrīla Vyāsadeva enunciates this verse, trayyā copaniṣadbhiḥ etc.
When a human being enters into the study of the Vedas to obtain vidyā, knowledge, he begins to take part in human civilization. Then he advances further to study the Upaniṣads and gain brahma jñāna, impersonal realization of the Absolute Truth, and then he advances still further, to sāńkhya-yoga, in order to understand the supreme controller, who is indicated in Bhagavad-gītā (paraḿ brahma paraḿ dhāma pavitraḿ paramaḿ bhavān/puruṣaḿ śāśvatam [Bg. 10.12]). When one understands that puruṣa, the supreme controller, to be Paramātmā, one is engaged in the method of yoga (dhyānāvasthita-tad-gatena manasā paśyanti yaḿ yoginaḥ [SB 12.13.1]). But mother Yaśodā has surpassed all these stages. She has come to the platform of loving Kṛṣṇa as her beloved child, and therefore she is accepted to be on the highest stage of spiritual realization. The Absolute Truth is realized in three features (brahmeti paramātmeti bhagavān iti śabdyate), but she is in such ecstasy that she does not care to understand what is Brahman, what is Paramātmā or what is Bhagavān. Bhagavān has personally descended to become her beloved child. Therefore there is no comparison to mother Yaśodā's good fortune, as declared by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu (ramyā kācid upāsanā vrajavadhū-vargeṇa yā kalpitā). The Absolute Truth, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, may be realized in different stages. As the Lord says in Bhagavad-gītā (4.11):
ye yathā māḿ prapadyante
tāḿs tathaiva bhajāmy aham
mama vartmānuvartante
manuṣyāḥ pārtha sarvaśaḥ
"As men surrender unto Me, I reward them accordingly. Everyone follows My path in all respects, O son of Pṛthā." One may be a karmī, a jñānī, a yogī and then a bhakta or prema-bhakta. But the ultimate stage of realization is prema-bhakti, as actually demonstrated by mother Yaśodā.
